Their objective was to use data-driven insights to combat urban heat stress, optimise land use, and support sustainable urban planning amidst the growing challenges of climate change.
To meet Doing Good's requirements, Latitudo 40 leveraged its satellite data expertise to identify urban heat islands—zones where urbanisation has significantly exacerbated heat stress. Using detailed land cover mapping, Latitudo 40 analysed high-resolution satellite data to examine surfaces that contribute to heat accumulation, such as asphalt, concrete, and other heat-retaining materials.
By integrating data from multispectral and thermal sensors, Latitudo 40's platform mapped temperature variations across urban landscapes. Enhanced by AI-driven algorithms, the system processed LST data to distinguish between natural areas (e.g., parks, vegetation) and urban zones responsible for heat island effects. This allowed Doing Good to understand land usage patterns, differentiating between natural landscapes, urban infrastructure, and agricultural regions. Additionally, microclimatic performance analysis of green spaces revealed the efficiency of urban vegetation in cooling the area and mitigating heat stress.
Doing Good used these actionable insights to refine their urban planning strategies, focusing on areas that required targeted cooling interventions. These efforts not only improved the quality of life in affected regions but also led to energy savings by reducing the need for air conditioning in heat-prone zones. The satellite-based solution proved highly cost-effective, reducing monitoring costs by 85% compared to high-resolution commercial imagery, while maintaining a high degree of accuracy. Moreover, the system's scalability enabled nationwide monitoring on a weekly basis, allowing Doing Good to continuously track the effectiveness of their interventions and make timely adjustments to optimise their strategies.
By utilising Latitudo 40's geospatial technology, Doing Good successfully addressed urban heat stress, paving the way for more sustainable, data-driven urban planning.
Latitudo 40's satellite-based solution offered Doing Good a powerful tool to track and improve land usage, helping them manage urban and environmental challenges across different geographical areas. This use case demonstrates how scalable, cost-effective satellite monitoring can drive sustainable urban development, reduce heat stress, and ensure the resilience of cities and landscapes alike.
